The Fair Oak and Horton Heath Greening
Campaign
THE GREENING CAMPAIGN REACHES EASTLEIGH BOROUGH The Greening Campaign was originally born in Petersfield when Terena Plowright began a local movement to encourage her community to address the amount of CO2 it emits. Terena felt that whilst many individuals care passionately about climate change, they can feel powerless acting on their own. The Greening Campaign drew local householders and businesses together to share ideas and run activities to find simple ways of reducing carbon emissions in their community. They were able to demonstrate how people working together can make a real difference. Terena organised a series of meetings in her local area, and the people who attended chose eight energy saving ‘pledges’ that would be easy for individuals and households to keep: for example, turning off lights when leaving a room, closing doors and turning down the thermostat by one degree, or washing laundry at low temperature 30 degrees. The eight pledges chosen were then printed on Pledge Cards that were sent to every household in the community. If households could take part in five or more of the energy saving ideas, they would put up their cards in the front window of their homes, so the Greening Campaign team could count the cards and estimate how much carbon the community is saving by taking the simple actions they had chosen. Local community groups, schools, local businesses, and other organisations also joined in with the challenges. This year the Greening Campaign has reached the Eastleigh Borough area of Hampshire, with Public Meetings having taken place in Fair Oak and Horton Heath in the summer, and the most recent Public Meeting taking place in Bishopstoke in November. School Pastors November 2009 saw the launch of School Pastors on the Wyvern Campus in Fair Oak. As the bell rings at the end of the day, pupils are greeted by uniformed teams of School Pastors who aim to offer a listening ear to those who feel vulnerable, and provide an extra pair of eyes to reduce the potential for antisocial behaviour at this busy time of day. The schools on the Wyvern campus are the first outside Greater London to benefit from School Pastors and the scheme is already making a difference to pupils and parents on the busy site. Whether it is helping reunite a child who has lost his mum, chatting to pupils and parents, or providing directions for visitors to the site, the school pastors are finding that there are plenty of opportunities to play a useful role as part of the community. |
