Ancient Egypt Comes to Fair Oak

Just over ten years ago, Hilary Wilson, tutor of Egyptology at the University of Southampton and currently a teacher at Itchen College, responded to the enthusiasm of her students and other local Egyptophiles to create a group in which they could indulge their passion and share their enjoyment in the subject with others of like mind. By word of mouth the news of this proposed Southampton Ancient Egypt Society spread and by the inaugural meeting in September 1997 more than seventy members had signed on. The annual membership has remained at about one hundred ever since.

With the blessing of the University's Archaeology Department, monthly meetings were held from September to July at the Avenue Campus, attracting speakers from across the country and even from across the Channel. These illustrated talks cover a wide range of topics from the inevitable pyramids and mummies to biographies of Egyptologists and reports on current excavations. The SAES has organised many trips, at home and abroad, the most recent being a Nile cruise (Nov 2007) and a visit to the Tutankhamen Exhibition at the 02.

From September 2008, the new home of the SAES is Wyvern Technology College in Fair Oak. Meetings usually take place on the third Saturday of the month, doors open at 1.30pm and the meeting will finish by 4.30.This years programme covers a variety of subject from Ancient Egyptian baking and brewing to the Egyptian sense of humor!

Anyone who is interested in the activities of the SAES will find further information on the website www.SouthamptonAncientEgyptSociety.co.uk. There you will see full details of membership subscriptions, meeting fees, the forthcoming programme of talks and directions to the new venue.
